community could care about folks in need rather than just talk about caring. Though young, the kids learned what the Breadbasket most needed at the time and found how to stretch their giving budget to help others. In the end, we were the ones who benefited most from reaching out."
Allie’s experience with her children at the Breadbasket left a lasting impact on their understanding of food insecurity and community. "When the kids were young, we toured the Breadbasket, and they were surprised to discover how pervasive hunger can be among their schoolmates and teammates. Their perspectives shifted, and they learned they could be part of Manhattan’s caring community by donating what they could so no one had to go hungry." Today, Allie continues to volunteer with the Breadbasket, finding joy in her work. "At the moment I am able to volunteer. My favorite days are Breadbasket Tuesdays when Courtney and I load up a truck with donations and roll them into the 'market' for volunteers to sort. I have received so much—joy, companionship, laughter, and quiet—in volunteering." Allie’s message to people wanting to volunteer with FHBB is clear: "When you give of your time and donate resources to benefit the people who need a little or a lot of help to feed their families, you become part of the caring community. You become part of the solution." We are so grateful for Allie and all our volunteers who make a difference in our community every day!
